PG Peer Mentoring
PG Peer Mentoring connects postgrads across the University of St Andrews, building community, fostering inspiration, and providing development opportunities.
All PG students at the University of St Andrews can take part, including remote students:
- Mentors must be in their second year or above of PG study at St Andrews
- Mentees can be in any year of PG study
The initiative is run through the University’s SaintConnect platform.
PG Peer Mentoring is a student-led scheme, with participants empowered to choose and create their own partnerships.
Mentors and mentees make short profiles with information about themselves, their academic experience and interests, and what support they can offer/would like to receive. Mentees can then request a partnership with a specific mentor, who will accept or refuse the request based on whether or not they believe it’s a compatible match.PG Peer Mentoring profiles take around 10 minutes to complete. Once a partnership has been created, you will agree expectations about the duration of the partnership, including how and how often you will communicate.
The Student Mentoring Team (studentmentoring@) will be available to answer questions and provide guidance. We may also contact you to check in on how the partnership is progressing.
Each partnership is different, but we’ve made some suggestions to help you build your profile, allowing you to identify areas you feel confident you can offer guidance on (mentors) or areas you would like to receive support with (mentees). These include:
- Cross-institutional working
- Project planning (inc. time management)
- Academic networking (inc. supervisorial relationships)
- Interdisciplinary research
- Funding applications
- Seeking publication
- Industry collaboration
- Commercialising research
- Conference participation
- PG life and community
