Incoming Undergraduate Mentoring

The Incoming Undergraduate mentoring scheme helps students transition to life at St Andrews.

We are a global community, and whether you’re joining us from Glasgow or Guadeloupe, beginning a new academic journey can bring significant challenges.

The Incoming UG mentoring scheme creates partnerships between incoming students and existing students before the commencement of the academic year, enabling new arrivals to build confidence through the shared knowledge and experiences of their peers.

Partnerships are created using SaintConnect, prioritising mentors and mentees having a shared:

  • Academic School
  • Geographical origin (where you’ve lived most recently before joining the University)

Both mentors and mentees must create a SaintConnect account to participate in the scheme. Once a partnership has been created, online communication can take place over the Summer through whichever platform both parties agree upon.

The scheme officially closes shortly after the commencement of the academic year. Partnerships may choose to meet up in person once in St Andrews and/or to continue an informal mentoring relationship throughout the year, but this is entirely dependent on what both individuals choose.

What’s in it for me(ntors)?

Mentors benefit from the opportunity to develop and enhance a range of professional skills, including leadership and communication.

Mentoring is a tangible demonstration of critical skills which are likely to benefit future professional and academic opportunities.

Many students also enjoy being a mentor for the chance to welcome new arrivals, share their experiences, and help build the next generation of the St Andrews community.

How do mentees benefit?

The transition to university life brings many exciting academic and social opportunities. It can also be challenging.

Having a mentor who has been through similar experiences and can answer questions helps to build mentees’ confidence. It provides reassurance through friendly, personal communication beyond facts which can be learned on the University website.
